ROKIA TRAORE - Sara
From the album Bowmboi released on TAMA 2003
The Malian singer and musician was awarded the prestigious BBC 3 World Music Award for this album... check it!
LARKOTEY OSCAR & THE EBAAHI SOUNDS - Suumo Hewo
My two fave backing vocal groups are Bob Marley’s the I-Threes and the ladies who back Larkotey Oscar on this beatiful song. Off the album NAA DANIOWIE. They are The Ebaahi Sounds. Some of the greatest harmonies and rhythmical melodies you’ll ever hear on this album. Very rough recording due to budget but the music is world class. Highly highly reccomended BLESS
If you want to get a copy of this album all I have is an address for Larkotey Oscar music Production: 44 Fortrose Garden, New Park Rd, London, SW2 4HU Tel: 07961009553
I’ve only got this on cd but it comes with me everywhere I travel. I couldn’t be without it, if I lost it there would be a serious search party out to find a replacement!
THE APPLES - Killing In The Name Of...
Brass & scratch led group from Israel covering Rage Against The Machine’s brutal classic. Replacing vocals with vinyl scrathing and brass chops. Absolute killer dancefloor tune which we dropped twice at the last GOODNOYZ ALL-NIGHTER on May 30th. From the recently released BUZZIN ABOUT album released on FREESTYLE 2008 - check the live stuff on utube
JAZZTRONIK - Samurai
Studio version of the electronic mind bender. Rare Japanese 12”
One of the great modern jazz fusion tunes, extremely tight rhythm section, a regular GOODNOYZ gem. I actually heard this used on Ski Sunday a few yrs back!?!?!
CLEVER BUNNY - Afrosambatic
I’ve crept the tempo up on this dub-samba tune, love it. Fresh London sounds. Hope this gets a proper release. Check all their tunes and collabs on carbonlogic.com - a great website where artists of all genres can submit tunes finished or sketches to get feedback, ideas from other artists and win studio time through competitions. You can check some of my sketches on there too... see MONK.
SAM IRL - African Dance feat. Anya
This comes from a 12” on PULVER RECORDS that kicks out 4 wicked tunes, all by young German producer Sam Irl. Brought to my attention by Ally Bongo who DJ’s with me at the GOODNOYZ parties.
Check out Sam’s myspace blog for free dubstep mix download
SU PAKA POOH - Theme De Yo Yo
From the vinyl vaults, another Japanese release. This is Su Paka Pooh’s cover of Theme De Yo Yo, originally recorded in 1970 by radical jazz group THE ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO feat. FONTELLA BASS on vocals and piano. This version is a lot more dancefloor friendly. From the album SUNNY SIDE GARDEN on MR BONGO 2002. If you have this record pull it out and re-listen to the album from start to finish... its quality.
STEVE SOUL BASICS - Kuchwa
ABICAH SOUL PROJECT - Abicah Soul
JAZZANOVA - Days to Come
Released on JCR Records. My fave 12” from these nu-jazz pioneers and considering the body of top quality tunes they’ve produced - thats saying something. Also check... “Let Your Heart Be Free” released on SONAR KOLECTIV
HERBERT - The Audience
A piece of pure musical genius. Matthew Herbert is the modern equivelent of Mozart or Bach. Fit a select few into that bracket - Thom Yorke, Ennio Morricone.
This track samples bits and pieces from the singers handbag and bodily functions to create a lot of what you hear. Its from the album Bodily Functions on K7. Its one of my top records of all time and I’d be lost without it. Matthew Herbert is also married to the singer on the track - Dani Sciciliano. Check her solo stuff and check Matthew Herbert’s BIG BAND album and artists on his ACCIDENTAL label, especially THE INVISIBLE
Thanks again for checkin’ GOODNOYZ.
